Seven Appliance Checks to Do Before You Call for Repair

By Gary Tantanella · Updated October 28, 2026

I worked as a mechanic for a little over 30 years and a robotics technician for about 25. A lot of my "repairs" in those years came down to a tripped breaker, a clogged filter or a loose connection. Appliances are the same. Before you pay for a service call, run through these safe checks.

1. Power

Check the breaker panel and any GFCI outlet nearby (kitchens, garages, laundry rooms). Press reset. Gas dryers and ranges still need electric power for igniters and controls.

2. Child lock or control lock

Many washers, dishwashers and ranges have a lock that makes the machine look dead. Your manual will show the button combination.

3. Water supply

For washers, ice makers and dishwashers, make sure the valves are fully open and the hoses aren't kinked behind the unit.

4. Filters

Clean the dishwasher filter, the washer drain pump filter (many front-loaders have a small door at the bottom front) and the dryer lint screen. A clogged dryer vent is a fire risk, too.

5. Fridge coils and airflow

In Florida heat, dusty condenser coils and a crowded freezer that blocks the vents cause a lot of "not cooling" calls. Leave space around the fridge in the garage, too.

6. Door seals and level

A torn gasket or a fridge that isn't level can keep the door from sealing. A dishwasher door that doesn't latch won't start.

7. Error codes

Write down any code on the display and look it up in the manual. Give it to the tech when you call. It helps them bring the right part.

When to stop and call

What to have ready

Have the brand, model and serial number (usually on a sticker inside the door or on the back), the age of the unit, and a short description of the problem. That makes for a faster, more accurate quote.
