Check these first (5 minutes)
- Is the temperature dial bumped? Fresh side should be about 37°F, freezer 0°F.
- Pull the fridge out and look at the condenser coils (under or behind). Dust and pet hair on the coils is one of the most common reasons a fridge runs warm in summer.
- Listen near the back: is the compressor humming? Is the small fan near it spinning?
- Open the freezer: if it's frosted over on the back wall, the defrost system may have failed.
- Check door seals. Close a dollar bill in the door; if it slides out easily, the seal may be leaking.
Common causes a technician looks at
- Defrost problems (heater, thermostat, control board): freezer frosts up, fresh side goes warm.
- Evaporator or condenser fan motors.
- Start relay or compressor issues.
- Sealed system leaks (refrigerant). These are the costly ones and need a tech with EPA 608 refrigerant certification.
- Leaks on the floor: clogged defrost drain or a cracked water line to the ice maker.
Repair or replace?
