Quick checks before you call
- Unplug it and check the drain hose for kinks, especially if the washer was just moved.
- Many front loaders have a small drain pump filter behind a panel at the bottom front. Coins, hair ties and socks clog it. Put towels down; water will come out.
- Does the lid or door lock click? A bad lid switch or door lock will stop the spin.
- Is the load balanced? One heavy blanket can stop a spin cycle.
What a technician usually finds
- Clogged or failed drain pump.
- Lid switch or door lock failure.
- Worn drive belt, motor coupler or shift actuator (top loaders).
- Leaking door boot seal or inlet valve (front loaders).
- Worn tub bearings: a loud roaring on spin. This is often a repair that costs more than the washer is worth.

Questions people ask
Is it safe to use a washer that leaks?
Not really. Water near electrical parts and under flooring causes bigger problems. Turn the water valves off until it's checked.
Front loader smells musty. Is that a repair?
Usually it's cleaning: wipe the door seal, run a hot cleaning cycle and leave the door open between washes.
