Washer Not Draining? What to Check Before You Call

A drum full of gray water is one of the most common washer problems, and sometimes you can fix it yourself in twenty minutes.

First: safety

Unplug the washer before you reach inside or take off any panel. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.

Step 1: Try a drain or spin-only cycle

Sometimes a cycle was interrupted. Run "drain & spin". If you hear the pump humming but no water moves, it's likely a clog. Silence may mean a failed pump or a lid/door lock problem.

Step 2: Check the drain hose

Pull the washer out gently and look for kinks or a crushed hose. Make sure the hose isn't pushed too far into the standpipe; it should go in about 6–8 inches.

Step 3: Clean the pump filter (most front loaders)

Look for a small door at the bottom front. Inside is a filter cap and often a small drain tube. Drain the water into your pan, then unscrew the filter. Coins, hair pins, buttons and baby socks are the usual finds.

Step 4: Check the house drain

If water backs up out of the standpipe or a nearby sink gurgles, the problem may be your home's drain line, not the washer. That's a plumber's job. Homes on septic systems around Marion County can see this when the system is full.

Step 5: Lid switch or door lock

Washers won't drain and spin if they don't detect the lid or door as closed. If the lock doesn't click, the switch may be bad.
